Migration assistant frozen?

Direct thunderbolt 2 to 3 connection from 2014 MBP to 2020 MBP using migration assistant. 2 hours in, old computer says transferring info but looking for and the new computer says transferring info but starting up....is this normal?

It turned out that the process of migration was frozen. I bravely hit cancel on both computers and started over. The second try was a charm because I was actually able to see the progress of the migration on the new computer. With the thunderbolt connection between the computers the whole process took less than 45 minutes

Greetings jujubad,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities! It seems your Mac is taking a while to finish Migration Assistant.

It can take a little bit for the process to complete, and it may show that your Mac is restarting during the process. Let the migration continue until it completes or until an error message is received. If an error message is received, go ahead and attempt the migration again:
