I would like to stop using Time Machine as the external harddisk I originally chose is too small to contain the content on my computer. In addition, the backups seem to take up space on my computer, and I need that space for the work I do.
I only used Time Machine to backup the content on my computer 2-3 times.
How do I delete all backups and stop using Time Machine, so I have more space on my computer and can use the external harddisk for something else?
The computer does not have Time Machine backups on it, the backups are stored on the external HD. If you want to remove all the TM backups on the EHD then the easiest method is to simply reformat it. NEVER EVER use Finder to remove individual backups.

you go into system preferences and click time machine and click on the on / off switch
and then you can format the ext hd as you see fit
You might have some local snapshots you can delete:
Operating any computer without backup is shortsighted and foolish. If your External Hard Disk is too small a capacity get one that has more capacity. This is MUCH wiser then operating without backup, with a backup this is a guarantee you will lose valuable data such as photos, music, movies, personal information etc....
