Forgotten Macbook Air2020 password

I forgot my password to get through the log in because I always use my finger scanning.

How can I resolve this problem?

Hi sumitraP,

Touch ID is convenient, but it shouldn't replace your password. In macOS, Touch ID locks out when any of the following occur:

  • You just powered on or restarted your Mac.
  • You logged out of your user account.
  • You haven't unlocked your Mac in 48 hours.
  • You're trying to unlock the Security and Privacy section of System Preferences.
  • You're trying to unlock the Users and Groups section of System Preferences, and FileVault is on.

To reset your password, try the steps in this article first. If those steps don't work, you'll need to start up in macOS Recovery. To do so, please see the below steps.

WARNING: If you're required to deactivate and reactivate your Mac in the password reset process, there is a rare risk of being forced to erase your Mac. In my testing, I've found that this occurs when Find My Mac is enabled and Activation Lock is disabled, or vice versa. This is the case if the screen described in step 3 part 3 appears.

  1. Ensure that you have a working Internet connection for the duration of this process.
  2. Start up from macOS Recovery.
  3. If you're prompted to authenticate as an administrator, look for a "Forgot All Passwords" option at the bottom. If it appears, click on that.
    1. If a Reset Password window appears, follow the instructions in that window and ignore the rest of these steps.
    2. If an Activation Lock window appears, enter your Apple ID and password to continue to macOS Recovery.
    3. If an Activation Lock window appears, but your Apple ID isn't required and you're able to proceed to macOS Recovery, do NOT proceed with the rest of these steps. There is a risk that you might be forced to erase your Mac.
  4. Go to the menu bar at the top of the screen, and select Utilities -> Terminal.
  5. Type "resetpassword" without the quotes and hit Enter (Return).
  6. Follow the onscreen instructions to reset your password.
