MacBook Pro will not send signal to external monitor

This issue has been posted by others. The link to the article from Apple Support is useless. Everything is connected.

System Preferences for Display shows a second monitor, but the monitor tells me "No Signal" and is black.

Mission Control does not show Desktop 2.

IN ADDITION, if I disconnect the monitor from the laptop, the laptop goes black and has to be shut down and restarted.

This is a MacBook Pro mid-2012 running Catalina.

The second display has been working fine with a MacBook Pro that is mid-2015 running Catalina.
