It depends.
If you're taking any classes that are concerned with x86 (Intel/AMD) assembly, or rely on any software that is only for Windows, you might want to look at getting an earlier model Mac (without the M1 chip).
Otherwise, I'd strongly recommend looking at the M1 MacBook Air or the M1 MacBook Pro. Both have fantastic battery life and performance, and can run almost all Mac applications. However, they cannot natively run Windows (you'll need a virtual machine or a remote desktop connection for that).
Main differences between the M1 Air and Pro:
Air:
- Cheaper
- Doesn't have a fan, completely silent
- Slightly lighter
- Remains cool (doesn't heat up)
- Has function keys only (no Touch Bar)
Pro:
- Has a fan, unlocks full capability of M1. (Fan remains quiet.)
- Remains cool (doesn't heat up)
- Has Touch Bar only (no traditional function keys)
- Larger battery - longer battery life
- More expensive
