ipad factory restore

The reason im asking this is because the iPad is locked with the apple logo. i tried to do an update through iTunes but it fails. Only other option is to try and do a restore. I understand if i erase all content via settings I won't lose pictures on other devices, but this is different than that. It fails and i get an error 26. Its for a friend and just don't want them to lose pictures. I don't believe they have done a backup on their phone.
