optical drive for the m1 Macbook air

I am trying to burn old cd's onto my new laptop. However, it seems that it cannot read any cd's. It seems to be able to read the optical drive. But once the CD is inserted it does not do anything. Nothing comes up in Disk Utility so I cannot mount the drive. Any suggestions?

I've just tried using my older Apple USB SuperDrive optical drive on my M1 MacBook Air.

It works fine and I'm playing music from a CD right now.

The SuperDrive is connected with an Apple USB-A to USB-C adapter cable. iTunes recognized the CD and asked if I'd like to import it.

I hope you find this helpful and/or find a solution for your particular drive.
