If none of the suggested steps shown on Apple's support page seem to solve the issue, such as making sure the notebook lid is open, checking for the latest software and making sure the tick mark for "install system data files and security updates is checked, and checking to make sure the startup disk is being launched at full security, you can see if your MacBook has System Integrity Protection enabled. To check this, locate your System Informations application and launch it. From there, select the sidebar that says Software. From the System Software Overview, look to see if System Integrity Protection is enabled. If not, locate your terminal application and launch. Enter the code, "csrutil enable" into terminal and press return. Hopefully this will solve the issue. Terminal could also return a message saying this action cannot be executed unless done in Recovery OS.
If needed to go into Recovery OS, it is no problem, it's easy. From here, shut down your computer and turn back on again as usual, except this time, hold down Command-R immediately after seeing the Apple logo and continue to hold until the MacBook is launched in Recovery mode. Login as usual and locate terminal from the menu bar above. Enter the same code, "csrutil enable" and press return. Now restart the MacBook to make the changes go into effect. Hopefully this solves the issue for you.

If you are getting a message that "Apple Pay has been disabled because the security settings of this Mac were modified" - go to Software Update/Advanced and uncheck the recheck "Install system data files and security updates." to see if that resolves the issue.

Hi,
Cannot to prove 100%, but after spending hours of testing various set-ups, restarting and etc. - I suspect, that each access and modification of Mac book settings in safe mode can cause, that Apple pay to stop working. Very unstable function on M1 at least in my case.
After I upgraded to macOS 11.3, Apple pay started working again. Miracle and no comments.

Hi,
I have the same issue on macbook Pro 13" M1. The focus with this "uncheck the recheck "Install system data files and security updates." does not work. Have any ideas how to deal in case with M1 ?
Hi, I guess that not.
I accidentally have formatted one of the logic volume, because of that asked to make full recovery from new one Macbook. Before this recovery Apple working, even icloud i can see, that apple pay is setup ...
Hi,
Thanks a lot. About Secure Boot - secure boot screen on my macbook looks different, than on picture in the link. Full
security is enabled. I see only first part of the picture (this is copy of screen I see).
Maybe there can be a problem ?
This is all new to me as well and I am learning on the fly. I need a few minutes to find some information. this page has some information but I dont know if it is the right information - https://support.apple.com/guide/security/startup-disk-security-policy-control-sec7d92dc49f/1/web/1
Hi,
Thank you with these new links I can confirm, that set-up windows is equal. Full security on my macbook is enabled, I will tray to change settings to partial security.
What is important - I have check Apple pay settings via "About this mac/apple pay" - and the are a lot of information. And on icloud account I also see, that Apple pay is se-up for this computer.
I remember, that during the installation process I was asked to set-up Apple pay, but have choose to set-up it later. Of course there is possible reinstall the system, but it cost a lot of time and I see it at "last resort".
I have found another one problem, which maybe is related to the current issue. When I have tray to create new "Application" with Automator - got this message :
During macos reinstall were created folders "Realocated items". Maybe there is a problem ?
Hi,
Have no idea, but yesterday Apple pay start working. Stupid, but fact - without any insertion, absolutely unexpected start working. Total bul....
Thank you and respect for suggestion ideas and help.
Hi,
Does not work.
This is second time when apple pay to stop working. I had some how fixed it, to tell the truth - some of manipulation with update setting, restarts or maybe installation of update 11.2.3 fixed it. Later on (± in a week) I need to one more time to enter in to safe mode and apple pay stopped working again.
Seriously - crazy and such unstable solution (M1 chip) ... Never had even similar problem with Macbook on Intel chip ???
First, the Support article doesn't quite match the reactions of the my MBP13 2020 4-port with the latest BigSur 11.3. I have Apple Pay set up on 2 iPhones and my iPad but, despite the useless time-wasting re-boot re-installation of OS, it still doesn't work. There have been all kinds of issues with every update since I got this new laptop. Too many to write about now. Why is Apple Pay broken for Mac?
Did you create a bootable clone drive?
