Formatting an old iMac (10.6) without disk utility

Hi,

For some reason the old mac I need to format hasnt got the disk utility. I've tried restarting holding command and R but was unsuccessful... does this only work with newer mancs?

That shortcut is only available on 10.7 or newer. Insert a compatible Mac OS X install DVD and restart with C or Option held down.

not sure which hard drive to format when trying to do complete format and reinstall I want to wipe my hard drive and do a complete reinstall of mac os. format MacOSX I'm trying to erase everything but the operating system on an old Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 In the disk utility it will not allow me to format Mac HD??? The options are there but not clickable. The only option it gives is to erase free space. I want to factory restore this. Any ideas?

Wiping hard drives of older macs ≈ I am trying to reformat/wipe the hard drives of some older macs. I do not have the original install disks and pressing Command R does not open disk utility on restart. Just opening disk utility without the Command R restart does not give me the option to erase the hard drive. The only option is to erase free space. Is there another way to erase the hard drives? I would like to do this before recycling.
