Apple watch won’t charge. Just displays red snake

My apple watch 5 won’t charge. It just displays the red snake of death. I put it to charge and the red cable doesn’t turn green. It stays red! Just got this as a Christmas gift so it doesn’t have apple care. I don’t have the money to take it to a Apple store. Is it the cable or the watch? Also, please don’t send me the link to the “Apple Watch Doesn’t Charge” page by Apple cause it doesn’t help. Need help! Thank you
