Migration Assistant

Hi,
I want to move user information from one Mac to another with migration assistant. When I get to the part of migration assistant that has me start the old mac holding down the T key, the Target disk mode appears on the old mac and it's hard drive appears on the new macs desktop, but migration assistant hangs and indicates "waiting for disks to appear". The "continue" button is grayed out. Any suggestions. Thank you,
