Blue Yeti volume issues with Big Sur

I am having a problem with volume using Blue Yeti. I have a mid 2020 Intel MacBook Pro with Big Sur. Yesterday I tried to use my Blue Yeti with Zoom and was unable to hear the other person I was connecting with, and unable to take the system off mute (even though I had not muted). I could go into the volume on the Touch Bar and move the bar to increase volume (and hear it increasing), only to see it immediately go back to mute as soon as I released my finger. Unable to force a change, I restarted with the Yeti plugged in. I was then able to control the volume.

I have been using Yeti with Zoom since I purchased the computer in late December, with no problems. The latest Big Sur update to 11.2 was on 2/3, and this was my first Zoom since that update. I am assuming it has something to do with the update.

I see reports of problems with the M1 Mac, but not the Intel. Any other Intel Big Sur users with this problem? Solution suggestions, other than a restart? Having only done this once I'm not sure this was a solution or a happy coincidence.

Ok, I've found the magic solution. Thanks to nikswami for putting me on the right path. So, here is what I did:

  • Purchased a powered USB hub
  • Connected the Yeti to the hub, and powered on the hub.
  • Plug the hub into a USB to USB C adapter, and then into the Macbook Air M1
  • Boom! It works!

Now, if I don't power up the Yeti first, when I plug it into the Mac, it mutes my volume just as it did before. As long as the Yeti has power from the hub to start with, it works. What a pain. At least the hub was only like $17.

Hey,

No external power supply - I just plug the hub straight into my laptop, and then plug the microphone into the hub.

For the adaptor between the laptop and hub, I use the Syntech USB C to USB adapter (bought from Amazon).

As a side note, I decided to order another Blue Yeti just to see if its a problem with my current microphone or the Big Sur update. The new microphone works fine, without needing the hub or anything else. So I'm guessing this issue might just be on microphones that were already being used, and then for some reason they were screwed up by the Big Sur update.

I'm not overly techy, so that's the best description I can provide lol

I'm having the exact same problem. I bought my Yeti mic in December 2020 and it was working fine with my mac until I upgraded to Big Sur. Now it automatically mutes the mic and internal speakers as soon as I plug it in, and I can not unmute it. The only solution is to restart the computer with the mic plugged in. However, if you unplug the mic and try to plug it in again, it goes back on mute.

Just installed the 11.2.2 update, which supposedly was targeted at USB-C issues, but it made no impact on this problem. Note that I actually do route my Yeti through an external monitor, which works as a hub, but it makes no difference. The only way to have the mic work is to restart with it plugged in. It will then work until unplugged, just as all users above describe.

I reached out to Blue Support on this issue a couple of weeks ago, their response to my ticket 5687917, none of which was helpful in actually resolving the issue, was as follows:

"Thanks for reaching out. Sometimes there are issues with USB devices

when new Apple OS versions are released. After about 2 or 3 weeks most

bug fixes have been released and USB devices begin to work gain

normally.

I’ve seen this happen with Capitan, Yosemite, and Mojave releases in the past.

It's

possible that a faulty USB C hub or something else might causing this.

But it's hard to say without trying the mic on a different operating

system first.

In the meantime, let’s try a NVRAM reset which can

often clear up temporary device detection complications. Shut your

system down and follow the directions below.

1) Press the power button on your Mac and then immediately press and hold the following keys:

option

+ command + P + RThe NVRAM reset can be sensitive, so make sure you

press the keys simultaneously and don’t release until you hear your

computer chime twice, or the Apple logo shows up.

2) After you hear the second chime and/or the Apple logo shows up, release the keys and your computer will startup like normal.

3) Once your Mac has powered up and loaded, reboot the machine once more.

4) View the device your Mac’s System Information

a. Click the Apple icon, then hold the option key and click System Information

b. Under Hardware, select USBc. Locate and view the status of the Blue microphone---"
