When I go to Disk Utility>Macintosh HD, the Erase button appears in shaded gray and will not operate. What can I do to activate?
"you can't cut off the [tree] branch you are standing on" -- so MacOS will not erase the drive it is booted from.
Boot to Internet Recovery, and 25 or more RAM disks are created for temporary files, leaving the boot drive free to be completely erased.
