Make sure to remember to empty the Trash (no insult intended as it is easy to forget).


If you are using the APFS file system, then those deleted items may still reside in the hidden APFS snapshots. Make sure all your backups have completed successfully so that those backup APFS snapshots are automatically removed. You can check on the APFS snapshots and even manually thin them or delete them using the command line:
