The main implication is that apps that are 32-bit won't work on Catalina. So if you're running any (MS Office 2011, Adobe Photoshop pre-CC, lots of others), they won't work.

As @ neuroanatomist has stated plus with Catalina, one will get a longer period of time of Security Updates. High Sierra Security Updates are pretty well finished. Under Normal circumstances and past history - Apple only issues Security Updates for the current macOS and two older versions, ie Catalina and Mojave
Whatever is decided - make a Time Machine Backup and if possible two Tested Clones each to separate external drives as insurance incase things go sideways.
