This Apple Support (for Big Sur) page says, "Eject an SD card: In the sidebar of a Finder window, select the card, then choose File > Eject. After the card’s icon disappears from the sidebar, remove the card from the slot."
SD cards do not appear in the sidebar on either my iMac or my MacBook Pro. How do I make them show up?

We recommend trying to rename the SD card from the Desktop and testing the issue again. If the issue persists, test in safe mode. Any thoughts on a solution for people who format their cards regularly? This wasn't an issue prior to Big Sur, but it's pretty inconvenient to lose the sidebar access if we format our cards.
