iPhone 12 Personal Hotspot issue

Hello,

I have an iPhone 12 (very new, just bought it last Saturday), and I'm having trouble to have my personal hotspot being detectable by my laptop (and my other devices). Even if they detect it, it won't connect.

Here's my setup:

1. Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data: ON

2. Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot: ON

3. Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot > Allow Others to Join: ON

4. Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot > Maximize Compability: ON (I honestly don't know what this is for.)

5. Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot > Wi-Fi Password: Password pasted from a password manager

6. Settings > Cellular > Network Selection: Not Automatic

7. Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Network: I fill all the APNs using the carrier's name and leave all username and password fields blank.

Additional information:

-) I have made sure the LTE icon is there between the signal bar and the battery.

-) I have reset the Network Settings before.

-) I have restarted the iPhone several times.

-) I have restarted the laptop as well.

-) I have the latest iOS version (14.4)

-) I also tried to turn on the Personal Hotspot setting from the Control Center, but it only turns on (Green & Discoverable) when the screen stays there. If I switch to another screen, and then goes back again to check it, it is now Gray and "Not Discoverable."

Could you tell me what am I doing or did wrong?

FYI, I'm a new iPhone user. On my previous Android phone, it only takes a Mobile hotspot switch, very few setups and my other devices would detect and successfully connect to it. I'm wondering if there's a myriad of settings needed to be set up properly on the iPhone 12 for the personal hotspot to be detectable (and connectable too) to other devices.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi there,

Thanks for the description and steps you have tried. A Setting released is called maximise compatibility this either turns on 5GHz WiFi or disables it I cant remember which one but have you tried connecting your iPhone to the laptop via a USB Cable this should create a network adapter setting on the laptop resulting in the connection being bridged. Try with and without the maximise compatibility settings on.

Regarding a USB cable, unfortunately I don't have one, so I cannot try that solution for now.

I see, so I take it that the Maximize Compability setting shouldn't be a crucial factor on whether the hotspot is detectable and connectable, right? I just tried switching it off but my other devices still won't detect it.

If I may, I have additional questions:

  1. My laptop (bought in 2016) and the other devices (two smartphones, also bought in 2016) are old devices. Is their age a factor in this? Like the "they're too old to detect and connect to the hotspot of the modern iPhone 12" thing.
  2. When "Allow Others to Join" is turned on, I'm asked to switch on the Wifi and Bluetooth as well. Coming from an Android user, this is a bit weird for me. Shouldn't the Wifi be turned off when using a hotspot? Because when both are on (cellular and wifi), the latter takes priority, and the LTE icon is replaced by a Wifi icon. Also, with Bluetooth and Wifi on, it drains the battery faster.
