Gaming does not, of itself, affect the performance and lifespan of an iPad. That said, many gaming Apps are CPU and GPU use a lot of power - which will lead to increased battery utilisation and the need, if operating from battery, to recharge more often.

All rechargeable batteries have a finite lifespan, during which time the battery capacity will diminish with each recharge cycle - each cycle reducing the maximum charge level by just a tiny amount. As such, as the total number of accumulated recharge cycles increase, the more the maximum capacity of the battery will decrease.

The iPad battery is rated to hold 80% of its initial maximum charge after 1000 full charge cycles - a full cycle being any combination of charges that totals 100%. For example, charging once to replace 60% of total battery charge plus another charge to replace 40% of total battery equates to one full charge cycle - as does 30% + 40% + 20% + 10%.

So, if you’re an avid games player that has to fully recharge your battery twice (two full cycles) per day, you’ll get 500 days (approximately 1year 4.5 months) from a new battery before your total capacity falls to 80% of what it was when new.

If you are the same avid games player, but instead power your iPad from its Power Adapter whilst playing games, you’ll considerably extend your projected battery lifespan - in direct proportion to how much you power your iPad from the external power source.

I hope this insight and explanation is helpful to you.
