iOS update (is it safe to update many versions of iOS instantly?)

I’m using a 4 year old iPhone 7 Plus, and currently running on iOS 11.0.2.

Question:

(1) Is it safe to update to the latest iOS (last time I check was iOS 14.4) directly over the air without doing any repercussions? cause I do fear that once I jumped so many versions my phone wouldn’t be able to handle it and will turn into a brick

(2) What is the best solution to resolve this dilemma because a lot of apps don’t support iOS 11 anymore and The phone is acting weird the past few days.

P.S. Buying a new phone or backing up 5 years worth of storage is not an option for my situation.

For future reference, the solution is to always promptly update iOS whenever a new version is released.

”Backing up 5 years worth of storage” is also something you should do often. But in your case, having not done it recently is not an excuse not to do it immediately.

Yes, you should update.
