How to Switch from one MacBook to Another in a Workspace?

I have two MacBook Pro laptops: one corporate MacBook (running Catalina) that I use for work and a personal MacBook (running Big Sur) that I mostly use for school. I have a fairly nice workspace with a LG Ultrafine monitor, external microphones, a dock, a laptop stand, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad. When I need to work, I need to have the corporate MacBook on the laptop stand and plugged in. When I do schoolwork, I need the personal MacBook on the laptop stand and plugged in.

Switching from one to the other is rather traumatic, especially getting the keyboard and trackpad to switch to the current MacBook. I currently power down one MacBook then power up the other one. I will spend several minutes getting app windows reset to where I need them and then spend a few minutes getting the keyboard and trackpad to connect to the new laptop. I will plug in the Lightning cable, wait for the keyboard or trackpad to be recognized, wait 30 seconds or so, then unplug the Lightning cable. It usually takes a few cycles of plugging in and out each of the keyboard and trackpad for them to connect successfully.

Is this normal? Is there a better way? Do I need to duplicate my desk and peripherals so that I have two separate workspaces?

Thanks,

Marty
