keyboard strokes lag
Letters take several seconds to appear.......batteries are fresh.

I've had this same problem with the MBA M1 and the MagicKeyboard I have found a temporary fix, but it does seem to come back to haunt you.
You will loose Bluetooth connectivity, so have a USB mouse handy.
- Hold Option + Shift and click on the Bluetooth icon on the menu bar.
- Click Factory reset all bluetooth devices
- Option + Shift and click on the Bluetooth icon on the menu bar again
- Reset the Bluetooth module
- Reconnect the Keyboard via bluetooth and it should be working again.
I have noticed that it does re-occur after a while and only long term solution for me is to plug the keyboard in via USB.
