can I control the native camera on my iphone 12 pro max from my ipad pro both running ios14.4

No - the native Camera App does not have any remote control capabilities.

Some third-party Camera Apps can be remote controlled from another iOS/iPadOS device. One example comes immediately to mind - Camera Plus:

Thank you, that is strange and a little dissapointing as I am able to view and take a picture from my apple watch. I was hoping that I could use the considerably larger screen of my iPad.
