My HPDeskjet2540 has recently (perhaps after a Big Sur upgrade) been failing to print. When the HP2540 is first powered-on it works OK, then a few minutes later it won't print again. The solution is to power-off/on, delete the items in the print queue, and start again. As far as I know the HP2540 has never changed, and has never previously behaved like this.

Try these steps, but first, make sure the HP is on WiFi.
Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > Select the HP in the list > hit “-“ > hit “+” > Select the printer, and for “Use”, use AirPrint > Add it, and try printing.

Excellent. I had trouble earlier replicating the fault. Have now had the fault occur again, without power off/on did the steps you suggest, and it worked immediately. Thanks so much.
