iPhone 12 for Verizon Grandfathered Unlimited Plan

I am interested in purchasing an iPhone 12 Pro, but Verizon is telling me that I would need to upgrade my grandfathered unlimited plan. I live in a rural area where 5G isn't accessible (my sister had upgraded her plan), so 5G is not needed. I want to keep my unlimited plan, BUT I want to upgrade my iPhone 8+ to a 12 Pro. Has anyone had success? and if so, what would I need to do?

(I know I have to buy retail , and that is what I am willing to do. I am not interested in 11 max pro)

I think it should work if you paid retail for the phone from the Apple Store (get the Verizon version) and then just used the SIM from your previous phone. But, I don't know for certain.

Have you used Verizon's comparison tool to see if the new plans might actually not be cheaper? I changed my plan last month because of a promotion and the new plan is still unlimited but costing me about three dollars a month less. Yes, I lost some of the international options I had on the old plan but.....that hardly seems to matter right now.

One thing I can tell you is that people who have the iPhone 12 are saying that carriers are no longer giving you the option to manually select 3G.

How your carrier decides to handle your account is up to them. Are you trying to bring your own phone to Verizon, or are you upgrading the phone through Verizon? If upgrading through Verizon and changing your account is one of the requirements, that is up to them. And, if they require you to make changes if you bring your own 5G capable phone to their network, that is their right as well. Nothing anyone here could do about it.

Thank you for your response. I was just thinking that, but that's $1,000 to test out the unlimited plan. I didn't know until now, but I actually used 45 GB of my data and have 10 days left. If I had WiFi at home and work, it would be a different story. I am fine with 4G. Now, maybe I can stick with my current phone and use the insurance plan to "update" my phone.

If the Verizon Stores were open I'd suggest you go in and float the whole scenario to someone. You have to be careful who you talk to, though, because, mostly, they're all young folks under tremendous pressure to meet various sales quotas. It's not like the days when I worked there and there were non-sales people who just did customer service.

Best of luck
