Try resetting the SMC for your Mac. This can reset power and ports on a Mac and SOMETIMES resolve issues like yours:

Check Finder Preferences.
Under General, make sure all boxes are checked so you can see items on the desktop.
Under Sidebar, make sure all boxes are checked so you can see items in the sidebar.
Just in case it is working but you can't see it.
If none of this works, what model and year is your computer?
