What does its cost to have more ram inserted in the iMac late 2013 model that has to be done by an Apple service agent?

I want find out if anyone knows the approximate cost of paying apple to increase my memory to 16GB. I have a late 2013 model iMac and apparently you can't install it by yourself but it is possible for an Apple service agent expand the memory to by replacing 2X 4 GB with 2X 8GB memory .

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.15

Hi Madmemory,

If your iMac is a 27" model, more RAM can be inserted using the access door in the back. You can get ram from https://eshop.macsales.com.

If you have a 21.5" model, NO ONE can upgrade the RAM, including Apple or any AASP. It is stuck as is.

Cheers,

Jack

  1. The iMac is vintage, so the cost might not be worth it, whatever it is. I do not know. You can find a local AASP and call them here to find out: Mac Repair - Official Apple Support.
  2. Only an AASP can upgrade it, not an Apple Store.
  3. I did make a mistake. In some generations of iMac, the RAM is permanently attached to the Logic Board, as you said. It is hard to keep them all straight with all the changes! :-)

Thanks for you advice Jack. However, you are not totally correct, although the cost may be so prohibitive the effect may be the same. I read on the Apple.com's Advice about Memory and RAM for the for Apple iMacs that it specifically states"the "Early 2013" and "Late 2013" 21.5 inch iMac models "has no user accessible RAM compartment " and so " RAM replacement on the iMac 21.5 inch ( Late 2012, Early 2013v and late 2013, Mid - 2017 or 2019 )MUST be done by an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider" . That is the reason that I enquired as to whether anyone knew what such a procedure costs. The maximum increase allowed is 16GB instead of the current 8GB . I have a Late 2013 21,2 inch iMac and so I am most interested to find out . You are partly right because the same Apple.com site says that "It is not possible to upgrade thew RAM in the "Mid -2014 or Late 2015 21,5 inch models at all after purchase.

Thanks Jack. I will check it out as you suggest , but as I said in my last post the upgrade price for 2X8 GB is only $86.00 on the MAC Sales site with free postage but looking at the video of what has to be done to insert the upgrade and remove the existing 2X 4 GB , it would probably be prohibitive and not worth it. I will phone them just to satisfy my curiosity. It is a great computer so It may be worth it compared to buying a whole new computer. . However A second -hand refurbished 27 inch iMac may be the way to go because upgrading the RAM is much easier on that model!

If you decide to get a 2nd hand 27" iMac please only buy from a reputable resellers such as OWC (www.macsales.com) or Macofalltrades.com DO NOT buy from e-bay, craigs list, amazon, Facebook marketplace etc.... Another resource is to buy an Apple Refurbished iMac directly from Apple. You can find them on Apple's refurbished page, the address is at the bottom of www.apple.com.
