Accidental trackpad input while typing
I think I've tried everything to reduce random input of text while typing. Suggestions? If I turn off "tap to click" how then do I actually click on something?

You never clearly state what exact Mac this is or what exact macOS you are currently running—details matter.
Old issue, new issue, what changed to precipitate your current problem?
Old Mac, brand new Mac?

Verify you do not have a battery that is swelling from inside, this can cause issues with both keyboard & trackpad, and needs immediate attention. Look for any sign on the outside case of seam separation ...
If neither situation applies to you—
Have you made any adjustment to make the trackpad work for you better—
Like turn down the sensitivity of the Trackpad ...

Keyboard Shortcuts:
What to Try:
A. Reset the SMC and your NVRAM:
Sometimes when changes are made to the system(i.e. updates), system configurations (i.e. for the keyboard) become manipulated, technically. So, reset the SMC and NVRAM.
B. Boot in Safe Mode:
[Hold Down command key + R key] simultaneously upon boot. In Safe Mode, corrupted system setting files (caches), are intentionally fixed.
C. Create a New User:
See what happens when you create a new Administrator user. If it is then connecting, then it is likely something configured in your current user.
D. Reset your SMC and your NVRAM:
If you can't enter you password correctly, then reset your SMC and your NVRAM. Sometimes changes (i.e. updates) are made to the system and then settings (i.e. keyboard) become corrupted, technically. So, reset both on your Mac. So, reset your SMC and reset your NVRAM. Then, try connecting once more. It might take three tries. to fix this. So, be certain you have the time to do so.
