WindowServer crashing MacBook Pro

Hi all

I have a MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) on macOS Big Sur 11.2, that is crashing at random times, and reproducing it is strange, as there is no pattern to it.

The issue appears to happen most when connected to monitors, but it has happened without being connected to monitors.

The computer will stop responding, and will sometimes have a fuzzy picture on some parts (see screenshot) and will then sometimes make the "whoosh" sounds from the fans and then restart.

This is what I have found in the console under 'Crash reports', with all of the crashes being caused by WindowServer.

My knowledge of hardware issues is limited, so I was hoping someone could help me out and has seen this issue before.

These are the things I have tried:

  • Reset SMC
  • Reset NVRAM
  • Reinstalled macOS Big Sur 11.2

Have also Google'd some parts of the crash log, but have found nothing concrete yet on what the issue could be.

Happy to provide further information if needed and thanks for taking the time to read this! (sorry if this is the wrong area too).

Hello Russian_Hoot,

We understand that you're experiencing unexpected crashing of your Mac. We'd be happy to assist!

In order to get a sense of what may be causing this, could you please boot in to safe mode and let us know if the crash happens in there as well? Start up your Mac in safe mode

If so, could you then please run a diagnostic on your Mac? Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac

Cheers!
