Exploding battery on Macbook Pro

Has anyone experienced the battery in a 2009 Macbook Pro expanding to such a degree that it has distorted the case and shattered the touch pad? Totally unbelievable!

I would like to send these photographs to Apple Customer Service but do not know where to send them as they make it very difficult to get in touch if you do not have the product serial number (machine won't start (obviously!) and you don't have the original packaging (its 2009 for goodness sake).

Any help particularly from customer services or comments would be appreciated.

The serial number is printed on the underside of the Mac's case, just turn it over and look (fine print and low contrast, you may need extra light and/or magnification – the iPhone's magnifier works great for that).


But to answer your question, yes – battery chemistry is powerful and can cause cases to warp, trackpads to crack, etc. The battery on my 2016 17" MBP swelled to the point where the Mac was rocking side-to-side on a half-inch bulge (happened when the Mac was >10 years old), but fortunately those models had a detachable battery pack so only the battery itself was affected – I just removed it and the Mac still ran fine (albeit only on AC power, and with the CPU throttled back which macOS does when there's no battery installed).
