iPhone Backup

If I go into mange storage, backups, and then click my iPhone and delete the backup what will happen?

Could I delete that backup and then be able to backup my phone with no repercussions?

(also do you need to backup your phone before you switch to a new one and what would happen if you do not.)

If you delete the backup then you don't have a backup to restore the device with. Same with a new device.
