I just got a new MacBook Air and am trading in my old MacBook Air. If I back-up my data on an external device and my new computer has no USB socket, howe can I retrieve my data?

Your new computer does contain a USB port. It is simply a newer version of USB. It is backwards compatible. See the post above.
All you need is an adapter or hub.
