Magic Trackpad and Windows Support for non-Mac hardware?

will apple be creating standalone windows compatible drivers for the magic trackpad? currently the only support thats offered is for Mac hardware running Boot Camp and Windows. I've tried hacking the drivers and boot camp to work on a non mac based windows install and had no luck.

thoughts, ideas?

i can get to the point where boot camp is installed, updated to the latest and laso updated w/the trackpad update. however i only get basic mouse movement and left click when paired via bluetooth. it almost seems like its related to the bluetooth stack itself that allows features.

MBP13, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

thanks for the tip! i'll try this when my 2nd trackpad comes. sold my first one to a pal online and got a bamboo pen and touch for my desktop. not sure i'll keep the 2nd magic trackpad; hard to justify now that i got the bamboo.

it really is a shame though that apple won't craft official windows drivers. whats the worst that will happen, they'll just sell a TON more to the HTPC sect and laptop users.

again, thanks everyone for the info. go team!

I just noticed a news story here:
http://uneasysilence.com/archive/2010/08/15032/comment-page-1/#comment-752015

They posted a different set of drivers. They are a bit bigger than the drivers I referenced from Usernet, so I was wondering if these performed any differently. Anyone up to compare them?

Here's the download for the new drivers:

If possible I'd like to clarify something? Has anyone been able to get right click and tap to click working specifically under windows XP. I've been able to pair the device and use left click, but on two different XP computers I'm unable to get right click working. If yes, could you share what steps and downloads you used.

I'm a fairly technical person and I've attempted to force the ATP driver to install on the bluetooth HID device, but once that is done the trackpad stops responding to movement (but continues to pair properly) and the device in device manager has a yellow ! and fails to start.

Just trying to figure out if I'm wasting my time or missing a step.

Ok, I just got my Magic Trackpad today. I have it working on both a 64-bit Windows 7 laptop and a 32-bit Windows XP netbook. Here's a quick how-to:

1. Download and install the appropriate driver below:
64-bit: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9PG0SLU3
32-bit: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EVISIOGI
2. Turn on your bluetooth adapter
3. Right click on the bluetooth tray icon and choose "add a bluetooth device"
3. Press the power button on the Magic Trackpad o it is aiscoverable by your computer. On my XP netbook I had to fiddle around with it a bit before the bluetooth wizard finally picked it up. Double click on "Apple Wireless Trackpad" once its discovered.
4. Use the pairing code "0000" to pair to the device. For XP you should have chosen to pair with the passkey found in the documentation (and filling 0000 in the blank).

Once the device has successfully paired, Windows should automatically use the driver that you installed first. This driver allows tap-to-click, two-finger tap right clicks, two-finger scrolling, as well as the normal physical click. It also allows you to double tap to drag-and-drop. As of yet, I haven't found a way to customize the interface (i.e. disabling tap-to-click or drag-and-drop, etc.). If someone finds how you could do that, please make a post.

If you want the scrolling to look really nice make sure you enable smooth scrolling in your internet browser. In Firefox it's a check box in advanced settings.

BTW, I'm typing on my Apple bluetooth keyboard and using my Magic Trackpad with my XP netbook right now. It works great!

I finally got my scrolling where I want it. I installed "yet another smooth scrolling" add-on for Firefox. You can make the scrolling as smooth as you like. But it also has a really good variable scrolling speed (i.e. if you move your fingers faster during scrolling you will get more scrolling per unit length of finger movement, much like what many mice do when moving the pointer).

Here's the settings I've had luck with:
Step size: 4 pixels
Smoothness(forepart): 10
Smoothness: 80
Acceleration sensitivity: 450 (the max)

These settings might not work the best for you if you have a lower performing computer.

I got mine working under Windows XP; at first, I had the same problem as most other XP users: the Magic Trackpad only works as a one-button mouse.

However, this is what I have done to make my Magic Trackpad work:
1) Installed Binary.AppleWirelessTrackpad_Bin.exe
2) Uninstalled the original bluetooth driver of my USB bluetooth dongle (It is the Toshiba bluetooth stack)
Windows XP automatically detected my USB bluetooth dongle and installed the Microsoft Bluetooth drivers that is included with Windows XP (Generic Bluetooth Radio and Microsoft Bluetooth Emulator)
3) Paired the Magic Trackpad using "0000" as passcode

Now, the Magic Trackpad's other functions are enabled, including tap-to-click, right click...
Note that in Device Manager the Apple Magic Trackpad driver is installed.

However, I don't find the Magic Trackpad as "magical" as I first expected it to be.

Please drop me a note here if it works for you.

Enjoy your Apple Magic Trackpad!

Having some wierd behaviours under 32bit windows xp (non-boot-camp) on my lenovo thinkpad.

After successfully installing the drivers and pairing the magic trackpad, i'm finding that every other time I touch the trackpad the cursor goes into text selection mode and starts to select text or what ever is under it. I have to double tap to go back to normal. It's like the OSX equivalent of 'dragging' with 'drag lock' is in effect.... very wierd and i've not seen anyone else complain about it yet

I've tried to install drivers from different folders after 7zip uncompressing the bootcamp drivers. I've also removed all the associated windows HID and Mouse HID drivers using 'Show Hidden Devices' in device manager and then tried reinstalling. Can't find any configuration panels that seem to work for the magic trackpad. The Thinkpad's trackpad works fine, but maybe that's interfering somehow?

Any suggestions?

Apple kind of officially support the driver for you, have a look:

http://www.labnol.org/software/apple-magic-trackpad-with-windows/14158/

Pretty cool isn't it? So Apple engineer is nice enough to let you get what you need for Windows, while still making their Steve Jobs happy. Technically Windows is officially supported by Apple like that, just they don't want to say it so you just need to do some simple work.

I would be happy if either Apple or someone else later having a new driver or software enable all possible like 3 fingers, 4 fingers for Windows as well. It is just all about the driver and software.

It is funny that I saw a post saying magic trackpad doesn't support old mac (may be around 3 years ago kind?), but support Windows XP. So you are a windows user like me, should be pretty happy about that LOL!

This helped me and finally got it working under XP. I had tried three different bluetooth adapters all with the same result. The trackpad would install, but would only function as a single button device with no right-click or other functionality.

What I ended up doing was uninstalling the Widcomm bluetooth software and downloading and installing the generic stack from http://bluetoothinstaller.com/

As described by Charles, the device works as is expected with the limited XP driver provided by Apple. Right-click, two finger scrolling (horizontal & vertical, and tab-to-click.

There may be other functionality as well I'm not aware of, but at least it is useable as a pointing device under XP now.

No luck on a Dell E6400. I had the Widcomm drivers installed from Dell's site. I am able to pair with the trackpad using 0000 for the PIN, but all I am able to do is move the mouse and single click. I attempted to uninstall the Widcomm drivers and install those from BlueToothInstaller.com, but those failed to install. Any other ideas? Otherwise i'm going to have to return this thing. I have excellent knowledge of XP and was expecting to get this to work, but to no avail.
