iMessage and FaceTime not working

So I bought a used iMac computer Mid 2009 running X El Capitan and I can't get the iMessage or FaceTime working and I and wondering if that is because of the OS I am running or am I missing something?

iMac, OS X 10.11

check each and make sure you are signed in properly. PREFERENCES of each.
