PHOTOS: How to make an intelligent backup from multiple sources?

I have years and years of photos from various Mac computers. Some are on hard drives, some are on CDs, and the others are spread about my 3 computers (one still iPhoto worthy).

How can I make an intelligent backup of all of these photos in ONE place? What software will I need? I'd like to be able to:

  1. Avoid duplicate photos.
  2. Organize the photos in albums like I did on iPhotos (by date and subject "Sue's Birthday", etc.) so I can find what I'm looking for.

Please tell me there is something reasonably user-friendly that will help. I've heard about Carbon Copy Cloner, Google Photos, and a few other ways but will any of these work for what I need?

Thanks in advance,

Debra

  1. Get all the images into one place and managed by one app.
  2. Back that up.

As you're posting on the Photos forum, and as that app is on your Mac anyway, then I suggest you use it. First gather all the images onto - say - an external HD. Then import them to a Photos library on that HD. It will detect most duplicates as you try and import them. Any others you can get with the help of PowerPhotos:

Once that's done and they are all in a Photos Library, then you'll need another disk for back up. As for an app to do it: Time machine is on your Mac, but others like SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner are equally good.

Google Photos is an excellent additional backup to the cloud.

Thank you Old Toad and Yer_Man, however I have thousands of photos going back 15+ years and I want to be able to keep the original folders/albums that I had in iPhoto (which Photo doesn't let me do). Photo took my iPhotos (when the OS changed) and imported one album as iPhoto Events but it's difficult to access them.

I also want to be able to import the old photos from hard drives and CDs so I can keep all of the photos in one organized place. I don't think that will work with Photos, plus it will take up too much space.

Thank you and keep your ideas coming :)

I've not found any other alternatives that I'd be prepared to trust.

That's a mite harsh. Viable and perfectly reliable photo managers include

Mylio - consumer level app, think of it as iPhoto+

Lightroom - consumer level app, think of it as Photos+

Lightroom Classic - Pro Level app. Quite the industry standard

CaptureOne - Pro level app

Exposure x6 - Pro level app

On1 Photo Raw Pro-level app

All of the, like iPhoto, are both managers and parametric editors

PhotoSupreme is a photo manager only

There are other apps that are very good Raw processors, but quite limited as managers, such as DxO Photolab, and some that are very well advertised but not so good in practice such as the Luminar range.

I've used or tested all of these apps at some stage.

I'm not really sure which would be the best - probably something other than iCloud. Something like Carbon Copy Cloner, Google Photos, Carbonlite....?

I don't know any of these and I'm hoping someone could tell me which ones will meet my needs without my having to tear out my hair in frustration :)

Thanks for your patience,

Debra

You list a lot of back up applications. But the first question is how do you organise the images when you gather them? The Finder? Photos? Some other app?

As for the listed applications: Carbon Copy Cloner is an excellent app for backing up to a hard disk.

Google Photo is a service that back up your images to the Cloud.

Which do you want to do?

Hi

There is no app that will let you keep everything exactly as it was in iPhoto. As Old Toad has pointed out, Photos will put events into folders, but that is far as it goes. Any non apple app won't even do that.

Yer_Man has told you what you need to do. Gather the images. Decide what system you want to put them in, and start organising.

Photos has the advantage that you already have it, and it is free. The space issue can be resolved by storing your library on an external disk (But there are requirements on how to do that, so come back if you decide to go that way)

Alternatives:

Just use a folder structure and browse using finder - not very convenient for a large image library.

Adobe Lighroom - monthly cost.

I've not found any other alternatives that I'd be prepared to trust. Certainly not google photos - and even that has a monthly cost now if you don't want degraded image quality.

Having said that - here is an "11 of the best" article for you to read through. You'd have to make your own mind up, and probably many are not available on MAC

https://www.adamenfroy.com/best-photo-management-software

Note: Carbon Copy Cloner isn't image management software, it is disc copying and backup software - a completely different beast.

Dear Yer_Man,

THANK YOU! This is exactly what I was looking for, I just didn't know it was referred to as a photo manager.

The Adobe Lightroom sounds great and so does the Mylio program. I especially like that Mylio states:

"Bring all your photos together into one efficient library

Import from all sources: phones, cameras, drives, clouds, scans

Access your entire library on all your devices

Find photos fast by date, people, places, and more

Automatically protects every photo in your library"

and

"If you've already spent time organizing your photos into folders, Mylio lets you import your current folder structure, saving you valuable time. Changes you make to Mylio from any device are reflected on all your devices, so you always have the most current version of your library. And if you ever switch to another photo manager, you can easily move your entire library – folders, photos, and metadata - to the new system."

This sounds exactly like what I was looking for and if it's fairly user-friendly I will be set.

Thank you so much for your help and education (and thanks to everyone who pitched in.)

All the best,

Debra
