The update file, already downloaded, may be damaged/corrupted. You need to delete the update package - and then download a fresh copy of the update.

To delete the failed update from your iPad:

Settings > General > iPad Storage

Scroll down the list of Apps until you find the Apple Update, tap, then select Delete Update.

After deleting the update, a forced-restart of the iPad is recommended:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On an iPad with Face ID: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

After restarting, you would be well advised to ensure that automatic installation of the iOS update is disabled:

Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates > Install iOS Updates - set to OFF

Connect your iPad to your Power Adapter - and keep it connected for the duration of the update process. This will ensure that the WiFi connection remains active and that adequate power is available throughout the power-hungry update procedure.

Now you can re-attempt manual update from Settings.

I hope this proves to be helpful in resolving the problem.

Okay,

That model number corresponds to an iPad Mini 4.

Your iPad model is too far behind in iOS/iPadOS upgrades/updates.

If you have access to a full computer, like a Mac or Windows PC, try either using the Finder on a Mac that has the newest macOS Catalina installed OR with an older Mac with an older Mac OS, download and install the latest iTunes version ( or latest iTunes for Windows PC ), make sure the Mac or Windows PC is connected to the Internet, connect your iPad by the USB charge cable to the computer and let the iTunes application upgrade/update that 2015 iPad Mini model, using the iTunes Software Update feature, to its current, maximum iOS of iPadOS 14.4.

Best of Luck to You!

Are you sure you actually have an iPad Mini 4?

What year and model iPad do you have/own?

The “A” model number can be found in small print on the back of your iPad under the bold print “iPad”.

What iOS/iPadOS version is this iPad, currently, running?

What is the rated, internal data storage space model of your iPad and how much of this free, internal data storage capacity is left inside of your iPad model?
