AirPods aren't working with my iPhone 11 Pro Max

My AirPod 6 Series is not working with my iPhone 12 Pro Max. On Bluetooth is showing connected when in my ears there is no sound and YouTube and other apps keeps hanging. Without the AirPod the apps function well. Kindly assist with what to do
