Macbook pro 2020 trackpad wont click along the edge.

I just purchased a new MacBook Pro 2020 after using an older 11inch 2015 air. It is my first time using the new force touch trackpad.

I have noticed that if I try to click the edge of the trackpad mainly the left and right side it won't work or will be intermittent. If I click from the middle and work my way to the edge it seems to work but if I just click on the edge it won't.

is this normal? I assume it is a way to stop accidental clicks but wanted to check with others to see if they have the same 'issue'

thanks

Englapino,

You're certainly welcome. It sounds like you've checked your Trackpad settings and it still isn't responding as expected around the outer edges. Let's continue by resetting the SMC and NVRAM on your Mac to see if that helps. Learn how from the support articles below:

How to reset the SMC of your Mac

Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac

If that doesn't help, is the Trackpad not responding as expected around the edges when booted in safe mode? Follow these steps to boot your Mac up in safe mode and test the issue:

How to use safe mode on your Mac

If the issue persists afterwards, we'd like to learn more to determine the next best steps to get it resolved. Have you noticed any trends with this behavior? For example, does this tend to happen when using the Trackpad in specific apps? Does restarting your Mac seem to help, even if only temporarily? Learn about restarting here:

Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac

Take care.

Hi there Englapino,

From what we can tell, the Trackpad on your MacBook Pro sometimes isn't responding to clicks around the outer edges of the Trackpad. We're glad you've connected with us in Apple Support Communities, and we can provide some guidance.

To start, you'll want to be sure the Trackpad is turned on. "Your Force Touch trackpad doesn't click when it's turned off, because it needs power to provide haptic feedback (like clicks). This applies to Magic Trackpad 2 as well as Force Touch trackpads built into Mac notebook computers." Learn more here:

How to use the Force Touch trackpad

Next, is 'Tap to click' enabled in Trackpad preferences? Learn more about Trackpad gestures here:

Also, if you try adjusting some of your Trackpad preferences, does that seem to help? Have a look at this support article:

Change Trackpad preferences on Mac

Cheers.

thank you for your reply. yes the MacBook is on and I have checked the settings. its still very temperamental. sometimes the edges click and sometimes it won't. this leads me to think it has something to do with palm rejection.

do you have a MacBook Pro that you could test to see if you are able to click the edges both left and right of the trackpad?

your help would be very useful to see if this is normal or not

thank you
