change of macintosh owner/HD permissions

For some reason, my Macintosh HD is set up so that only the system can read and write. When I try to add administrators with the same permissions, it tells me: The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have the necessary permission.

How can I change this? Please advise. Thanks.

You don’t.

Recent versions of macOS make the top level of your system drive read only.

There is no reason to put any files or folders there, anyway.

Store files in locations under your home folder, or under /Users/Shared if applicable.

I think you may be misunderstanding the problem.

If I am right this is the system security “gatekeeper” feature that kicks in when you try to launch an application for the first time.

Can you post a screenshot of what you see when you try to launch that application?

Also, if you control-click the application and choose Open, you should get a similar message but with an additional button labeled “Open”. Click it and the application should launch. Afterwards you should have no more trouble launching it.

Ok, so here is thing. The Unix executable file inside the application bundle does not seem to have the "execute" bits set properly.

I could tell you how to set these bits, but I won't. There's a distinct possibility that you got a corrupted download, or a fishy one.

Just download a fresh copy of the application from their website, flumeapp dot com

and it will work without jumping through hoops.
