Image Capture not seeing phone

I prefer to 'manage' my photos myself from my iphone 8.

I generally use image capture, download a bunch & sort them to folders.

MBPr running El Capitan, but have tried on a more recent Catalina Mac with same failure result.

Essentially, my phone is recognised when I plug in, itunes fires up, but image capture finds no device (& photos to, not that I use photos or would know how to get them from there to my folders!)

HELP!

Am I destined to never get the pictures from this phone again?

Have tried reboots, etc. Can't update MacOS on main MBPr due to app that needs that version.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

You mentioned your iPhone is recognized by your Mac. Can you tell us more about what you're noticing that confirms the device is recognized? When you open iTunes are you seeing the device within there?

For the issue with Image Capture not seeing your device, let's see if the steps here help: If Image Capture doesn’t open when you connect a device to your Mac

Also, can you tell us if you have another iOS device available that you can try connecting to this Mac to test in Image Capture? That can help us isolate the issue a bit further.
