I recently installed Big Sur on my 2017 iMac and now my external hard drive icon doesn't show up

I recently installed the Big Sur OS on my 2017 iMac and now my external hard drive icon doesn't show up on the desktop. The only way I seem to be able to access it is by opening another existing file on the desktop and opening it there.

Anyone else have this issue and is there a way to retrieve my external hard drive desktop icon?
