Checking AirPods battery in Control Centre
Is there any reason (other than Apple being slow on the uptake) I cannot 3D press the battery in Control Centre to check my AirPods battery?

Hmm, I don't know about that.
However, you might want to try the batteries widget in the Daily View screen (swipe right from the first Home screen) because it shows the status of all of your batteries.
