"filter" fail message

To this 24 inch Early 2009 iMac, Mac OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan, I have connected, via USB port on the back of the iMac, an HP DeskJet 2132 All-In-One printer/scanner. Every time I print a document, I get this: "filter" fail - followed by a huge crash report that I send to Apple. This started 3 days ago. I chatted with an agent from Apple and he politely told me that my iMac was too old and that they did not tech them anymore. I have reset the printers, reloaded the drivers using HP's Easy Start app (that takes me to the correct driver for my printer)...nothing has worked. I have tried reseting CUPS using Terminal but I do not know what the password is. I tried using the password used to initially get into the iMac but that doesn't work. Suggestions?

Greetings Alan,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities! It seems you're unable to use your printer/scanner with your iMac, as you're noticing a "'Filter' failed" message.

Check out the troubleshooting steps in the article below, which is associated with the error message you're receiving, and reach out to HP support if the issue persists:

If your HP printer doesn't work and you see a warning that HP software '...will damage your computer' - Apple Support

Kind regards.

When I finally talked to an HP tech, he told me that it was not an HP problem. Apple will not tech this iMac as it is too old. The HP DeskJet 2132 All-In-One printer/scanner works just fine when I plug it into my newer MacBook Pro's USB port. So I know it is the OS on my iMac. The confusing part is that I cannot update the iMac's OS anymore so it has been OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan for some time now...and the printer worked quite well several days ago. I am not going to reinstall the OS just for this printer as long as my MacBook Pro does the job.
