If you are referring to updating macOS, follow this link: How to get old versions of macOS - Apple Support. If you have a Late 2009 iMac, download macOS High Sierra 10.13. If you have an Early 2009 download OS X El Capitan 10.11.

I do have High Sierra with an early 2009 iMac. I was hoping to try for Mojave, the next one later, but I guess that would be a stretch...I am afraid to attempt the upgrade as maybe it would mess up my hardware (?)

My daughter gave me the computer a couple of years ago. I guess I am fortunate to have had it this long!!
