how do I update my computer software ?

I have been trying to update my computer but there are saying there is no the apps wont update in till I get the new software update

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and if your MacBook Air is a 2012 or newer model, download Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur. If not, you can't.
