How do I stop Expansion triangles from being overly sensitive?

I just got a new (to me) MacBook pro and I’m having a continual problem that folder expansion triangles are just too sensitive. It take me 2-3 times to open the folder. I usually get a pop up window like this “as if” I’ve pushed down the control key. Any tips on how to stop this?

Assuming you're using the Trackpad, check the "Secondary click" setting in System Preferences > Trackpad > Point & Click.
