For several days now my phone's screen will start blinking rapidly then go blank. First noticed this after disconnecting from my computer after a night of recharge. Now it happens at random times, but several times a day. I cannot restart the iPhone in this condition; the only thing that works (and it works every time) is a reset. So I can always get back up and running. But this need to reset several times a day seems odd. Any ideas?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.4), iPhone 4, iOS 4.01

I haven't seen the blinking, but twice now I've looked down to see my screen off and completely unresponsive. Only by using the two-button reset am I able to get it back up and running.

Yep. Same thing here. This has happened to me during a call where I've needed the screen either to use the keypad for call prompting or to hang up the call. It's extremely frustrating.

Dear Apple execs...why have you released this phone, disappointing so many of us? It's clearly full of errors. Do the right thing.

My phone just started blinking rapidly and the screen fades out to white... it came back once from a reset but now i can not get my screen back... anyone know what to do?

Try resetting by holding the top (on-off) button and the front (home) button at the same time and hold until the Apple logo appears.

Follow up: it seems to have worked to reset all the settings under Settings:General:Reset:Reset all settings. I did this several days ago and the blinking screen and then going blank has stopped. You'll have to reset your settings and passwords after you do this, but no apps or data are lost.

Ten days or so back, the Apple store gave me a new iPhone 4 because my original one I stood in line for seven hours to get would simply go dark with no screen blinking. Now my new one is doing the rapid blink bit and sometimes eventually goes blank but at other times seems to keeps blinking until I can shut down and reboot. On a couple of occasions it appeared to be cycling through different apps that either were, or had recently been, open. The only common trigger event I have identified is unplugging the USB or headphones, but that is less than 50% reliable trigger event.

On the theory it might be related to an application, I have been scrupulous about updating all my apps and I have gotten rid of some that have not been updated since iOS 4 was released, but I could easily have missed some. Other than the apps, the only thing common to both iPhones is the SIM card?????

I have another appointment at the Genius Desk, but the first available slot when I made it Wednesday night is Wednesday of next week. I have just tried your reset all settings idea but I am not canceling next week's Genius Desk appointment yet. Hopefully I will be able to cancel because your "fix" worked.

My phone has been fine since I reset all the settings; the blinking and then blank screen was happening several times a day prior, and has not happened at all since the reset almost a week ago.

    Good luck!

    Hi Everyone
Interesting reading I am on my 3rd new I Phone 4 in 3 weeks and still get these problems Blinking, Blank screens. Did anyone get a final fix i.e was it an old app software or did restoring factory settings fix the problem.

Am fed up of rebooting phone 2-3 times a day or restoring every other day

    Cheers

Guys..do you have a case or protective film on the iphone. Try removing them and see whether it will resolve the issue.

The problem is IPHONE has a sensor to see how close a person is, ie. if he is closer to his ears, then screen turn off. In the scenario where you have a protecter, it thinks someone is keeping it close to them and turn it off.

So try without your protector and if it work change the protector. It worked for me.

Thanks for the idea, robbb1 - I am trying the Reset All Settings process now. Hate to have to re-enter those wi-fi codes, but if it makes my phone work again, that would be great. Will watch it from here.
