How to reset an ipad mini that I purchased that is disabled?

I purchased an ipad Model# A1432 and have been trying to factory reset it. My friend didn't know her passcode, I assume, and it is now disabled. Is it even possible to factory reset the device or did I purchase a paper weight for my office? I have attempted to power off and then hold down the "Home" button while I plug the device into my laptop, but have not been successful in the ipad resetting. Am I not doing something correctly?? I am definitely Apple product challenged.

Thank you in advance.

You need to erase it by restoring it with iTunes on a Windows PC or Mac (use finder with any Mac running MacOS Catalina or Big Sur). Erasing a device by restoring it is the only mechanism to reset a disabled device.

Your friend may still need to disable action lock though before you can use it. If so, show her this document -> How to remove Activation Lock - Apple Support
