big sur 11.2 finder and spotlight search not working

after upgrading to Big Sur 11.2, finder and spotlight searches no longer work. I reinstalled the operating system as recommended by a tech support person but it did not fix the problem. Spotlight can only find applications and seems to be in an eternal indexing state. it's been over a week since the reinstall. Finder search shows <spinny thing> Loading... and never returns a result.

Boot into Safe Mode by booting with the Shift key held down and check there to see if the problem persists.  Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

sbahles, try this go to the spotlight preference pane and select the privacy tab. At the bottom of the list there are +,- buttons click on the + button and add your internal drive (macintosh hd) or the drive you booted from. Wait a couple of minutes and then select the drive you added and remove it from the privacy list.

What that does is delete are the spotlight indexes from spotlight. Removing it will have the computer reindex spotlight.

Let us know if the tech support person had you try this already.

I hope this helps.
