black ink not available on hp Deskjet 3520 since changing ink using new MacBook fully updated. why will it not print black ink? Ive updated driver but MacBook will not let me change firmware

Three issues come to mind: 1) dirty print heads on that device, 2) damaged or empty black cartridge, or 3) out-of-date device drivers. You can remove and replace the cartridges, and clean the print heads and retry to see if the black print returns.
As for device drivers, the networked HP DeskJet 3520 e-all-in-one printer is supported by Apple's built-in AirPrint driver, and there would be no need for any HP software or drivers. In System Preferences > Printers & Scanners panel, right-click on the 3520 icon, and select Reset printing system… During the device re-add process, choose AirPrint instead of HP drivers, and then test print something to see if your black print returns.

Did you properly install the new ink cartridge? Follow the printer/cartridge instructions for changing cartridges.
How about cleaning/realigning the print heads?
I have never owned an InkJet, but I wonder if you can tell the level of available black ink either through the Printers & Scanners panel's Options pane, or visually inspecting the black cartridge. Acts like it is out…
I don't have a HP printer so can not try this. Does the printer have a control panel on the printer where you can print a test page? Does the test page print including black?
It is my understanding that HP is rolling out firmware to detect usage of non-HP ink cartridges, and if that is a factor here, perhaps suppressing black ink is their form of retribution for denying them ink profits.

Well that clearly indicates it is a printer/cartridge issue not an issue with your Mac.
Hi sadly this did not solve the problem. All colour inks are good but there is no sign of any black ink on a test.
Yes, I’ve this type of printer a long while and happy with installation of cartridges. It will not print anything in black now but was before I changed cartridge.
No with other hp printers I’ve not used genuine ink and they always end up failing. I’ve used hp ink direct with this printer from hp and it says thanks for installing genuine ink!

Yes I’ve done that a few times now and to start with some black ink but faint and not good quality. Now no black ink at all.
