Thanks for the response. I do not have two factor authentication on my bellsouth mail account. I can log on from my laptop using only the password I entered on the mail account setup screen on my iPhone. If there is a setting somewhere on my iPhone that is telling it to ask for a second password I am not seeing it. Prior to changing my password from my laptop on my mail account I have had no problems with reading my emails from this account.
Any other ideas?
That explains it. AoL seem to be doing something similar.

Does your account have two factor authentication? Check Bellsouth support forum.
The only remedy is to do as you have already, ie delete the account from Settings, Mail, Accounts and add it back .
Try again is my advice.
I’m setting up my bellsouth.net email to be read on my iPhone 11. When checks for mail says cannot get mail. No password provided. In setup there is a password. Where is it missing from?
